Shipping Containers for Landscape Companies: Equipment, Chemicals, Multi-Season Storage

Landscaping has wild seasonal swings: mowers in summer, snow blowers in winter, fertilizer year-round. Containers solve the multi-season storage problem for under $15K.

Landscaping is one of the most seasonal businesses out there. Mowers and trimmers dominate from April to October. Snow blowers and salt spreaders dominate November through March. Fertilizer, herbicide, and mulch need year-round secure storage. And most landscape companies are running on too little physical space at the home base.

Here’s how a typical 3-truck landscape operation uses containers to absorb the seasonal swing.

The situation

A regional landscape + lawn care company:

  • 3-5 trucks, mix of pickups + dumps + lawn-equipment trailers
  • 10-15 mowers (commercial walk-behinds + zero-turns + push)
  • String trimmers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers (2-3 of each per crew)
  • Snow blowers + plows + salt spreaders (for winter operations)
  • Fertilizer, herbicide, fungicide — needs temperature-controlled secure storage
  • Mulch + soil + grass seed bulk inventory
  • Pavers + edging + landscape stone for installation jobs

Their home base is a residential property or small commercial lot. The garage is full. The pole barn is rented + over capacity. Equipment lives outside under tarps half the year. Things get stolen. Chemicals don’t store well. Crew loses 30 minutes/day finding gear.

Container picks for a landscape operation

Three roles solve most of the storage problems:

  • 40ft Standard at home base ($4,500-$6,000): Off-season equipment — snow blowers in summer, mowers in winter. Plus tools, attachments, parts inventory.
  • 40ft Insulated for chemicals ($8,000-$11,000): Fertilizer, herbicide, fungicide. The insulation prevents the temperature cycling that makes chemicals separate, crystallize, or degrade. Also keeps grass seed germination viable longer.
  • 20ft Standard for installation materials (optional, $3,500-$5,000): Pavers, edging, stone, irrigation parts. Lockable on-site storage during multi-week installation jobs.

For most 3-5 truck landscape operations, the right combo is one Standard + one Insulated at the home base. Total: $13K-$17K, vs. continuing to lose tools to weather and crew to gear-hunting.

The math

Item Cost
40ft Standard Cargo-Worthy $5,000
40ft Insulated Cargo-Worthy $8,500
Tilt-bed delivery (both, same day) $1,400
Cribbing materials $200
Subpanel + LED lighting + outlets (both) $2,200
Total $17,300

The breakeven: a landscape operation losing two pieces of equipment a year to theft (one $1,500 commercial mower + one $400 blower) plus 30 minutes/day of crew time finding gear ($15K/year in lost productivity for a 3-truck operation) — the containers pay back in less than two seasons.

Multi-season storage pattern

The seasonal rotation works like this:

  • April-October (lawn care season): Active mowers + trimmers + blowers in the trucks. Snow blowers + plows + salt spreaders in the Standard container. Chemicals + fertilizer staged for active use in the Insulated container.
  • November-March (snow + ice season): Active snow equipment in the trucks. Mowers + summer equipment in the Standard container (cleaned, drained, winterized). Insulated container holds road salt, ice melt, and de-icer.
  • Transition weeks (April + October): Crew swaps the containers’ contents. Takes 2-3 days but consolidates an annual chore.

The Insulated container’s value spikes in winter — it prevents salt and de-icer from clumping in cold humidity, and keeps emergency hand-warmers and crew gear above freezing.

Chemical compliance

Some states regulate landscape chemical storage (pesticides, herbicides) under specific rules. Common requirements:

  • Lockable, secure storage (steel container easily satisfies)
  • Temperature-stable (Insulated container satisfies)
  • Spill containment (add a containment tray or sealed floor coating)
  • Ventilation (add 2 louvered vents during setup)
  • Posted signage (per state regulation)

Confirm specifics with your state Department of Agriculture or commercial pesticide applicator licensing board. Most state rules are easily met with an Insulated container + basic setup.

Where to start

  1. Confirm chemical compliance. Check your state’s landscape chemical storage rules — most are met easily, but the rules dictate small setup details.
  2. Confirm site access. Most landscape operations work out of residential or small commercial property. Tilt-bed delivery access for two 40ft units typically works; tight lots may need creative placement. See site requirements.
  3. Plan the electrical. Subpanel + outlets + LED lighting installed during initial setup. See our electrical guide.
  4. Cargo-Worthy is right. Behind-the-shop placement doesn’t need the One-Trip premium. See Cargo-Worthy detail.
