Converting a shipping container into a gym or fitness space.

Container gyms are popular for home-property workout spaces, MMA/boxing gyms, CrossFit affiliate startups, and physical therapy clinics. The key challenge isn't structural — it's climate. A workout space generates significant heat and humidity from human bodies; the container has to handle the load.

TL;DR
Cost + scope

Total cost: $20,000-$60,000 for a workout-ready container gym (container + insulation + climate + flooring + electrical + equipment). Build time: 2-4 months. The big budget item is climate control — gyms need oversized AC because human bodies generate substantial heat during exercise.

What's involved

The actual work, step by step.

  1. 01

    1. Container selection

    One-Trip 40ft High-Cube — the height matters for full-extension exercises (overhead press, jumping rope, pull-ups). 20ft High-Cube works for cardio-only setups.

  2. 02

    2. Flooring

Rubber matting over plywood subfloor. Cheap; $300-$800 for a 40ft container. Protects the container floor and reduces equipment noise.

  3. 03

    3. Insulation + climate

Closed-cell foam on walls + ceiling. Then OVERSIZED mini-split — 12K-18K BTU for a 40ft (vs. 9K typical for office). Don't under-spec; gym heat is real.

  4. 04

    4. Ventilation

Two louvered vents (high + low) for cross-flow. Helps with humidity from sweating. Optional ceiling fan for circulation.

  5. 05

    5. Electrical

Dedicated circuits for cardio equipment (treadmill, elliptical, rower). Standard outlets for lighting + fans + speakers. 60-100A subpanel sufficient.

  6. 06

    6. Equipment + setup

Rack + bench + plates + dumbbells. Mirrors on one wall (light reflection). LED panel lighting overhead. Speakers (Bluetooth or wired).

Start with the right shell

The container is half the build.

We sell containers, we don't build conversions — but the right starting container makes every step downstream easier. Here's what to pick.

  • → One-Trip 40ft High-Cube for full-feature home gym
  • → One-Trip 20ft High-Cube for cardio + light strength gym
  • → Two 40ft containers side-by-side for small commercial gym
  • → High-Cube specifically — workout movements need overhead clearance
