Maintenance · door gaskets
Replacing door gaskets on a shipping container.
Door gaskets are the rubber seals around the cargo doors. They fail over time — UV damage, paint contamination, age, cold-weather stiffness. When they fail, water + pests get in. Replacement is straightforward DIY work, $50-$200 per door for materials.
The process
Step by step.
-
01
Why gaskets fail
UV degrades rubber over years. Cold makes them brittle. Paint dripping in during repaint contaminates the material. Eventually they crack, tear, or compress permanently.
-
02
Signs of failure
Visible cracks running along the gasket. Water on the floor after rain. Mice or insects inside. Doors no longer seal with light pressure. Light visible through the door seam in daylight.
-
03
Sourcing replacement material
Standard household weather-stripping doesn't fit container door grooves. Order EPDM container gasket from a container parts supplier. Cost: $50-$120 per door's worth of material.
-
04
Removal process
Pry old gasket out of the groove with a flat-bladed screwdriver. Clean the groove thoroughly — scrape out paint, dirt, rust flakes. Vacuum.
-
05
Installation
Cut new gasket to length (slightly long, then trim). Press into the groove starting at one corner. Work around the perimeter. Some installs use rubber cement on the corners for security.
-
06
Test fit
Close the door. Should compress the gasket but not require force. Test in light rain or with a hose. Adjust if water gets through.
Avoid these
Common mistakes that defeat your maintenance.
-
✗
Using household weather-stripping — doesn't fit the groove + doesn't weatherproof
-
✗
Painting over gaskets — they stiffen, crack, and stop sealing
-
✗
Ignoring small cracks — they grow; eventually water damage compounds
-
✗
Cleaning the groove poorly before install — debris prevents seal
-
✗
Installing one gasket but not the other — pressure imbalance leads to failure of the new one
