Maintenance · foundation + ground
Foundation care: keeping your container off the ground.
The container's lifespan depends more on the foundation than most owners realize. Bottom rails sitting in dirt + water rot in years; bottom rails on proper cribbing last decades. Foundation maintenance is mostly inspection — annually for cribbing settling, drainage paths, and ground conditions around the container.
The process
Step by step.
-
01
Why foundation matters most
Steel containers handle the elements except where they touch the ground. Bottom rails sitting in moisture rot from the inside. Cribbing is the cheapest way to add a decade of life.
-
02
Annual inspection
Check level (use a 6-foot level across the container floor). Look for settling at any corner. Inspect cribbing for rot, displacement, or compression. Check that ground hasn't shifted to push water toward the container.
-
03
Cribbing replacement
Pressure-treated 4×6 timbers last 20-25 years. Concrete blocks last indefinitely. Replace any rotted, split, or settling cribbing. Lift container with jacks to swap.
-
04
Drainage management
Water should flow AWAY from the container base, not pool near it. Add gravel + slight grade if needed. Clear vegetation that traps moisture.
-
05
Vegetation control
Plants growing against the container hold moisture and accelerate rust. Keep a 2-3 foot buffer around the base clear of vegetation.
-
06
When to upgrade foundation
If you're lifting the container anyway (for repaint, relocation, or replacement), upgrade from timber cribbing to concrete piers. Decades of additional life for modest cost.
Avoid these
Common mistakes that defeat your maintenance.
-
✗
Skipping cribbing inspection — quiet failure mode that accelerates over years
-
✗
Pressure-treated timbers buried in dirt — rot faster than rated lifespan
-
✗
Letting weeds + brush grow against the container — moisture trap
-
✗
Drainage that flows toward the container — pools water at bottom rails
-
✗
Ignoring settling — eventually causes the container to twist + doors stop sealing
